Diversity & Outreach

DC Audubon Society’s Statement on Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion

DC Audubon Society believes that everyone has the right to enjoy birds, the outdoors, and a healthy and safe environment.

We acknowledge that injustice, inequity, and disparity affect many people in our society and this may prevent them from authentically seeing themselves in nature, including here in DC. Further, we recognize that in order to achieve our mission to appreciate and conserve birds and their habitats in all eight wards in the District of Columbia, we must work to include everyone no matter their race, gender, sexual orientation, religion, political affiliation, age, disability, and background.

DC Audubon Society is committed to reflecting Washington, D.C.’s diversity in our leadership and membership. Only by embracing a wide range of values, skills, and perspectives, will DC Audubon Society truly achieve its advocacy, education, conservation, and outreach goals.

We are committed to building an anti-racist, equitable, diverse, accessible, fun, and inclusive organization to support birds and people in the D.C. area. We welcome your advice, feedback, questions, constructive criticism, and support as we put this goal into practice.

National Audubon Society in the recent POLITICO article

Dear DC Audubon community,

The official chapter for the National Audubon Society in the District of Columbia is deeply saddened by allegations that the National Audubon Society leadership devalues contributions made by women and people of color as highlighted in the recent POLITICO article.

The DC Audubon Society does not discriminate against prior, existing, and potential organization members on the basis of race, color, religion (creed), gender, gender expression, age, national origin (ancestry), disability, marital status, sexual orientation, or military status.

Having a diverse and inclusive organization that values the contributions and creative efforts of its members falls directly in line with our commitment to reflecting, DC’s diversity in our leadership and membership. Only by embracing a wide range of values, skills, and perspectives, will DC Audubon Society truly achieve its advocacy, education, conservation, and outreach goals.

We are committed to building an equitable, diverse, accessible, fun, and inclusive organization to support birds, their habitats, and people in the Washington, DC area.
